45 Years

45Another great movie in our Cinematheque series. The story takes place over the course of the week prior to Kate and Geoff’s 45th wedding anniversary celebration. Geoff has secrets from his past and as the week progresses Kate learns more and more about those secrets.

I loved the ending as it left you wondering what would happen in the days and months to follow.

Carol

CarolIn preparation for this movie I read the book it was based on, The Price of Salt. I loved the book so I was anxious to see how they would portray the story on the big screen.

The movie didn’t disappoint; it was every bit as good as the book. The period setting was perfect and the actresses playing the two main characters couldn’t have been better chosen. There were a few differences between the book and the movie, but nothing that made any difference to the story.

Macbeth

macbethNeither Pat nor I really felt like going out to the movies but we like to support the Cinematheque series. The selections seldom disappoint either so that gets us out when we’d rather just stay home.

I had a lot of trouble understanding the dialogue (the Scottish accents were very authentic) but I knew the Macbeth story from school so was never lost! The cinematography was interesting and well done.

Pat was less familiar with the plot and on the drive home he asked about certain parts of the story. I would explain to him what was happening (basically who was killing who and why) and then he would tell me what he thought was happening. The two points of view were often so far apart that I laughed all the way!

Mustang

mustangWe saw this movie a week ago as part of our Cinematheque series. It’s the first time in a long time that a sub-titled movie has been shown.

Five sisters live with their grandmother in Turkey after their parents have died. They attend school and live a life of relative freedom until a neighbour reports back to the grandmother about their “scandalous” behaviour (innocent after school swims that include boys). Their uncle gets involved and the girls are confined to their home. Before long two of the sisters are married off and the third commits suicide to prevent the same fate. The younger two hatch a daring plan to escape their fate and find their freedom.
