Doctor Strange

I should say right off the bat that I’m not a fan of 3-D movies, nor am I a fan of comic book stories.

Whenever I watch a movie in 3-D I am reminded of the View Master reels we had when I was growing up. The characters in the movies seem small in relation to the backgrounds and it all seems a bit “off”.

I’m not sure there was ever a comic book that covered this story. There were some good special effects in the movie, but there were lots that were other-dimensional and not all that interesting to me. Pat says he can already see the possibility of a sequel. There was some good humour in the lines but not enough to make it worth the time it took to see the show.

I should have stayed home but it had been a long time since I’d been to the movies and the popcorn was calling me. Sadly neither the movie nor the popcorn were very enjoyable!

Indignation

indignationThe movie is based on a Phillip Roth novel that I currently have on loan from the library. It isn’t a big book but I just didn’t have time to read it before the show.

I didn’t know what to expect because the trailers didn’t give much away. The acting was excellent and the story ended before I wanted it to. What seemed like a surprise ending was, in fact, foretold in the opening scenes.

Last Cab to Darwin

last-cabThis Australian film is based on a true story. When Rex is given only three months to live he decides to drive from Broken Hill, New South Wales to Darwin, Northern Territory 3,000 km away. Rex is determined to be the first patient under a newly-created law that allows for physician-assisted suicide. A cab driver by trade, Rex sets out on his journey, much to the chagrin of his friends. The Australian Outback, although very stark in many parts of the film, is beautiful.

Café Society

cafeWe saw the trailer for the latest Woody Allen film several times but we weren’t impressed; the movie was better than we expected but somehow it just missed.

For much of the dialogue you could almost hear Woody Allan’s voice coming from Eisenberg’s mouth. The overall casting was good but Steve Carell never disappeared into his character. The period costumes, settings and music were well done.
