Ripple Afghan (Crochet)

~ 54″ x 54″

First finish of 2022. I had a bin of pink yarn and I thought I’d get more than one afghan out of it but if one is all I get when the bin is empty I’m okay with that. Makes me think that some of my other bins might clear out quickly as well.

This was an easy pattern to crochet and I’ve already started another scrappy one with the leftover bits. The pattern has different instructions (mostly in the foundation chain) to cover both worsted and sport-weight yarns.

My next afghan will be another ripple but this time I’m going to knit it using Aunt Gertie’s ripple afghan pattern.

Happy Birthday Mum

Tuesday, November 30, 2021

I save all the knitting and crocheting that I do throughout the year and donate it on Mum’s birthday. She donated countless knitted mittens over the years to various groups.

Some of this year’s donation went to the Salvation Army. Usually they add some of it to their Christmas hampers and have some of it available for kids to take home as gifts for their care-givers.

I also donated to BOND this year. They are the group I served lunch to for many years. The leader always says they miss my soup; that was probably my favourite menu item as I made it at home the day before. That and a sandwich was always well received. Since Covid the link between BOND and Family Place (a drop-in space for parents and tots that have graduated from BOND) has strengthened so the donation went to both of them and they will figure out who gets what. They also have a day where kids can come in a pick a gift.

2 afghans, a baby blanket, a small scarf and a shawl

Happy Birthday Erica

November 22, 2021

Erica is new on my list this year; she is Big Dylan’s (Dylan Burton) partner.

I used up the last of my Misty yarn on this. After I thought I was done I found a bit more yarn that had rolled out of my basket and was sitting behind my chair. It added a bit to the width of the afghan but It is still a bit long and skinny.

It is an easy pattern as the rows repeat so it is quite mindless. It is also a good way to use up multi-coloured scrap yarn and I’ve used it often in the past (and will continue to do so until my yarn is used up).

NOTE: It is the way the light shines on the afghan that makes some of the rows look more cream than white.

Country Star (from the Splendid Sampler 2 series)

There are 44 pieces in Erica’s card but it’s paper-pieced and that makes it easier. I haven’t met Erica yet but I hope to soon. I don’t know if she’s a “country” person but I think there might be a country song in there somewhere.

Baby Blanket

~ 22″ x 32″

Another project from my evening stitching and my goal to use up my yarn.

I’m quite sure this yarn followed me from Yellowknife, through Port Coquitlam and finally to Powell River. I didn’t have enough of it to make one of my standard baby blankets so I found a crochet stitch to use and crossed my fingers that it would turn out to be a good size.

The stitch I used is a shell stitch. It might have been better had I used a larger hook but I’m okay with the results.

This will be a donation to the BOND group. They give out baskets to all the babies born to their members; the Guild has donated several quilts to them so I know they can use blankets of all sorts.
