Happy Birthday Brian

December 11, 2022

Cheyenne (May 5th from the Quilters’ Block-a-Day calendar)

I already had a number of card tops made and it was just a matter of picking one for Brian and quilting it. I chose this top because the orange fabric came from Diane’s stash which Brian kindly send to me.

As I studied it to figure out the quilting I thought something looked “off”. I double checked the location of the half-square triangles (because that is usually where I make my errors) but, in this case, it was the location of two of the other blocks that was wrong and it was an easy fix.

After looking through my books a couple of times I gave up on finding the block. It took longer to look through my Splendid Sampler books to find the name of the block than it did to put it together and get it into the mail. As it turns out this one didn’t come from my Splendid Sampler blocks but from my block-a-day calendar that I was working my way through during the first phase of the pandemic.

Calendar Block – December

December 1, 2022

from Quiltish Corner

I was back to my original set of patterns for the calendar block this month. Although the pattern is very similar to many of the other blocks, it took me three times to get this one right.

Prior to my surgery I cut out all the fabric I would need for the block. When I started to put the pieces together I realized my background was too similar in tone to the tree so I started over – more cutting and half-square triangles to make.

I had it all put together and ready to quilt when I realized I had one of the half-square triangles turned the wrong way. It wasn’t easy but I managed to reverse stitch and turn it around without having to take the whole thing apart.

It has been fun making these for Kathryn but I can’t say I’m sorry to see the end of them.

Calendar Block – November

Poppies for Grace (by Elizabeth Eastmond of OPQuilt.com)

I definitely wanted a poppy in the November block and it only took me a few minutes to find a free pattern online. It was smaller than I usually make but I added to the borders and it worked out fine.

The block was really quick to make – I had the top finished in one sitting and the quilting took another session.

Happy Hallowe’en

Spellbinding Table Runner (from American Patchwork & Quilting)

Since Kathryn’s calendar block had a decidedly Hallowe’en design I decided to make Hallowe’en table runners for Christy and Elizabeth. Although the pattern is the same I mixed up the fabrics to make them look different from one another.

I found the pattern online and I’ll be keeping it handy as it would work for other seasonal runners; I’m thinking a definite Christmas theme and perhaps an Easter theme if I have enough spring-like fabrics.

I couldn’t send a box of treats to the Thomases without adding a Hallowe’en themed project as well. I found these two in a bin so sent them on their way. The purple one is from my Quilters’ Block-a-Day calendar and the cat is a project that I did with in my Thursday sewing group.
