I picked three of my favourite Splendid Sampler blocks for my girls.
Flying High, for Christy, was easy to do and it allowed me to try some thread painting on the appliquéd birds. I echoed the bird shapes in the quilting – another first for me.
Family Affair, for Kathryn, was a difficult block even though it was paper-pieced. I did a few of the pieces a couple of times and when it was all done it was a quarter-inch too small. I cut it down a bit (thus the lost points) but since it was a stand-alone piece I didn’t worry about it.
I love scrappy, I love stars, and I love a pattern that works the first time. I changed the name slightly and sent this Scrappy Star to Elizabeth. It reminds me of those coloured wooden shapes we used to play with – or was that my kids who played with them? I still have them on a toy shelf and they sometimes get used when the grandkids are here.
