Duplicate Keys

Author: Jane Smiley

Duplicate KeysI was sure I had read something by Jane Smiley in the past and didn’t like it so I was reluctant to take this one down from the shelf. I enjoyed the book, but it is more of a suspense than a thriller.

Five friends move to New York; three are musicians, Susan is the girlfriend of one of the musicians, and Alice and Susan have been best friend “forever”. When Alice finds two of the musicians dead in Susan’s apartment she and the police begin to speculate about what might have happened. Alice realizes the truth when someone enters her apartment (with a duplicate key) carrying a gun in the middle of the night.

When I finished the book I went back to see if I could find the Smiley book I hadn’t enjoyed. It was called Moo and there is no mention of it anywhere in the back pages of this book.
