My Magic 8 method worked great for those half-square triangles yesterday. I admit to havingĀ a bit of trouble with the math though.
There are measurements and additions to be done to determine the size of fabric you start with when you use the Magic 8 method. I was able to do the math just fine, but then I started to think that some methods leave only a bit of room for squaring up so I added some extra inches to what I needed. There was a lot of fabric that needed to be trimmed off at the end, but at least I wasn’t short. Next time I’ll probably add less fabric and see where it gets me.
Secondly, when I looked at the pattern I was using for these cards I realized I didn’t need nearly as many half-squares as I thought. But that’s okay because I have several extra pieces that can be used for other cards, or for a miniature quilt. I didn’t think it would be appropriate to make all my September cards from one pattern so I’ve set the extras aside for now.
I’ve been using a different technique for binding some of these smaller projects and I really like the way it turns out. It is a bit fiddly getting the measurements right, but after three cards I think I’ve got the hang of it. I seem to get better corners using this method and I’m trying to wrap my mind around how it would work for a larger quilt. Someday, when I have more time and a quilt I don’t have a deadline for, I may try it.
More hand stitching tonight – it never ends!
