The Other Mrs. Diefenbaker

Author: Simma Holt

DiefenbakerI don’t know when I first purchased this book, but I know it was a surprise that John Diefenbaker had been married twice. Diefenbaker was a household name when I was growing up. I’ve never read any of John G.’s memoirs, but apparently Edna is barely mentioned in them although she was friends with everyone, regardless of their political views. In the opinion of most who knew Edna and John, John would never have become a successful politician, let alone Prime Minister, had it not been for the behind-the-scenes support he had from his first wife.

Edna began her teaching career in Rosetown from 1918-1919, with a brief interruption when the schools were shutdown during the flu epidemic. There is a photo of Rosetown from 1919 and I bet some of the buildings are still standing!
