Knowing when to give up

I finished my card in good time this morning and I thought I might have time to get my Farmer’s Wife block done before lunch. The block today was particularly challenging. There were times I wondered why on earth I was paper piecing two pieces of the same colour together; why not do it in on a larger piece? I followed along but when I got to the part where I needed some “Y” seams I knew I needed a break and a tutorial.

Today was Cash Mob day and since it was at the garden centre Pat was keen to come with me. I didn’t think we needed to be there right on the dot of one when the participants mob the store, but Pat wanted to get going. The deal with the Cash Mob is you commit to spending $20 cash in the store. I went with a plan today; I wanted a couple of hanging baskets and a pot of flowers for the table on the deck. Pat also picked up a few herbs and I ended up spending well over my $20. We like the store though and don’t mind supporting them. We decided to go out for lunch when we finished up at the garden centre and on the way home we stopped at Mitchell Brothers store to pick up a few groceries. We certainly supported our local businesses today!

I watched a couple of videos on the “Y” seam when we got home and then headed upstairs to give it a try. I had no luck whatsoever; no matter how far I took back the seam I just couldn’t get my head around how to do it. I know Stacia and Deloise would have advised me to take a break, have a glass of wine and try again! We didn’t have any wine in the house so that wasn’t going to work for me. Thank goodness for the internet as I found a woman who is doing the same quilt and hates “Y” seams; she had generated a paper piecing pattern that made much more sense than the one I was following. I threw my first attempt away, started fresh and I have just now finished the block.

I’m on the last set of repeats on my afghan and then I’ll see what that Jacob’s Ladder stitch looks like.
