A rare day at home

Wednesday, August 15, 2012

Do you ever have one of those days where the day is gone and you don’t really know where it went. This is the first full day I have had at home in I don’t know how long and I wanted to be certain at the end of the day I had accomplished something.

I was up by 6:30 – maybe in anticipation of my day at home. As usual, I spent the first hour (or so) catching up on e-mail, FaceBook and the various blogs I read each day. By 8:00 breakfast was over and I had a load of laundry in the washer. I headed upstairs to my studio to see what I could get started on.

I sewed my Community Quilt strips together first, because I wanted to check out the size of the top. The piece has plenty of length, but I might add a couple of borders to the sides.

Once the laundry was out on the line I headed out to cut the grass. We have such a small lawn that I’m always amazed at how long it takes to cut it. I go over it with the mower once, then I rake it, and then I go over it with the mower again. I’m following doctor’s orders and I didn’t get out the edge trimmer this time. My elbow wasn’t happy when I was done, but the grass looks good.

I had time to quilt my four birthday cards before lunch. When lunch was over I did a bit of housework. The kitchen garbage needed to be emptied and so did the composter. I composted a few more coffee pods and then checked to see if my laundry was dry. I brought in what I could, and then I washed out some plastic bags and hung them out.

I took time to pick some berries from the yard. The blueberries are ripe and, although we don’t have many, they certainly are sweet. There was only one white strawberry – we keep them picked off pretty clean. There were enough ripe blackberries that I was able to pick a few. I’ll need to get out the ladder to reach the rest. And finally, there were a few currents on our bush. I got all the berries washed and in the fridge and then got the beds made. I really needed to do some vacuuming, but my elbow reminded me not to do that on a day when I’ve already stressed it with the yard work.

I headed back to the studio and spent three hours on one of my Advent calendar projects. I’ve been putting off working on it because I wasn’t sure what I was doing. Just my luck that when I actually work from a pattern it allows for your own creativity (I don’t have much) and doesn’t give very good directions! Anyway I tackled it this afternoon and have six of the pockets completed. Now that I’ve made a start I don’t think I’ll be so nervous about proceeding.

Pat is out for the evening so I had leftovers for dinner. The laundry is in and put away, and the dishwasher is running. It is still really warm in the house but in another hour the sun will have moved past our windows and, hopefully, it will cool off quickly. I got the cards ready for the mail – I post them tomorrow when I head out for my Red Cross Shift.

I think I’ll spend the evening with my knitting. I have a baby cap to stitch up, and I think there is enough wool left for a couple more.

What did you do today?
