We had a lovely dinner last night at a restaurant right at the edge of the water. We planned on an early night, but when we got back to the hotel there was a party going on across the pier. We could ignore the flashing neon lights, but the DJ and the dance music was a little louder than we would have liked. However, they didn’t seem to be giving up so we settled in for the night.
A few minutes after we turned off the lights, the fireworks started. I don’t know what they were celebrating, but they did it in style. Although it wasn’t conducive to sleep, we at least had a great view of the show.
We had a five o’clock wake-up call and the cab picked us up at 5:30. Our check-in at the airport went smoothly and we had lots of time to make our plane. We were late getting to Amsterdam and we had to run to catch our flight back to Vancouver. We had to go through a passport check, and then another security check at the gate. I had a moment of panic because my plastic bag of fluids wasn’t in the pocket I always carry it in. I searched and searched and decided I must have neglected to pick it up when we went through security in Rome. I didn’t care about the stuff I had lost, but security checks rattle me at the best of times. By the time we were through to our gate they were boarding our flight.
Pat and I were lucky enough to have a row of seats to ourselves. We were both surprised at how quickly the time on board passed. I had a book to read and Pat watched three movies. The flight attendants were coming around with snacks and drinks and meals all during the day too so that kept us happy.
Getting through customs in Vancouver wasn’t the hassle I thought it would be. We only waited about ten minutes for the shuttle to the South Terminal. We had a couple of hours to wait for the Powell River flight and that’s when I started to fade.
Our friends took great care of the house while we were away. We missed the lilacs blooming, and one of the rose bushes is finished too. But our peonies are out, a few of the lilies are in bloom and everything looks green. We have lots of work to do in the beds and we’ll get at it in the next couple of days.
We saw some wonderful sights on our holiday, but there is nothing too shabby about the view I have out my own front windows!
