We set out this morning in search of the train station. We asked directions at the front desk of the hotel and they marked our path on the map. They also said it was too far to walk but we were determined and didn’t think it looked too bad.
We stopped at the Fortress along the way. They have a walk all around the top and from the number of locals we saw it is a favorite spot. There were several elegant elderly men, some smartly dressed elderly women, a few young mothers, and what appeared to be grandmothers and their grandchildren. The view from the top was spectacular and we could see out over the Tuscan hills.
But on we marched, up and down the hills. We hit a dead end once and had to retrace our steps. Pat saw immediately where we went wrong and we were on our way again. We got lost once more and stopped to ask for some directions. The family were from Germany and couldn’t help us. We moved along and found some Italians who pointed us in the right direction. We had walked beyond the edges of our map.
After 1600 steps – surprise … we ended up back at the Fortress! Apparently we walked in a huge circle. The good news is that we knew where we were so we could make it back to the hotel!
After lunch we took a local bus to the train station and got tickets for our trip from Florence to Naples, and our bus tickets from here back to Florence. We still need to sort out the buses to one or two spots out of town, but we’ll save that adventure for another day.
