Beth, a year-round resident of Nantucket, is the mother of three and is completely floored when she learns that her husband is having an affair. In her free time, Beth returns to the writing she gave up after her children were born, and Olivia becomes a portrait photographer during the busy tourist season.

As the story unfolds, both Olivia and Beth learn lessons from the fictional character that Beth has created – an autistic boy named Anthony.
