Long line-ups

We had news over Christmas that Lainey was closing her fabric shop. Although I wasn’t surprised, I’m sorry to see it go. Lainey has had health issues in the past and Trevor, her husband, said that she didn’t bounce back this time the way she usually does. Lainey told me at the last class I took there that they have been hurting financially; she buys all her stock from the States so with the dollar being so low and a new shop in town it has had an impact. I took my very first quilting class from Lainey, and Trevor helped me pick fabrics for the first block I made for the Guild.

Today was the first day of a two-week long sale. Her shop generally opens at 11 AM so I was at the door a few minutes before. Apparently the notice in the paper advertised a 10 AM opening so I was already 24th in line by the time I stepped foot in the door. I picked up a few notions, some fat quarters, a bit of fabric I needed for a project I’m working on, and two cutting mats – one very large one and a rotary mat. I had a gift certificate from Christmas so with that and the sale prices I came out pretty good in the end. When Trevor was tallying my bill up we both laughed that this was one of the few times I only used one sheet of paper for my receipt.

I’ll go back again next week and, if there is anything left, I’ll pick up a few fabrics from some of my favourite lines. It took me three hours for my number to be called today and I certainly won’t wait that long again. We could have had a Guild meeting in the shop and there was lots of visiting done while we waited. It was fun seeing the fabrics that other shoppers picked, and there was lots of trading back and forth depending on who had the earliest numbers. Hopefully some of the pretty stuff I saw today will be left.

It was well past lunch by the time I got home but Pat hadn’t eaten so we went out. Our book store is also closing so we stopped there after lunch for a bit of a browse and Pat bought a couple of things. I picked up several books but ended up putting them back on the shelf; I have more than enough books. I know you can say that about me and fabric as well, but don’t!
