Roughing It in the Bush

Author: Susanna Moodie

RoughingI liked this book more than I thought I would. If you are interested in the settlement of Upper Canada (yes, before Confederation) you will find this informative. Although written in the early 1830’s it is very entertaining as the author shares sketches of their life after emigrating from England. The poems at the beginning and end of the chapters were readable but could be skipped.

Enniskillen is mentioned twice in the book. An Irishman is singing about the Enniskillen Dragoons, and her much-loved servant (yes, they had a servant) came from Enniskillen.

On another personal note, the author’s granddaughter (or maybe great granddaughter) took photographs of the Northwest Mounted Police regiment that Laurie’s grandfather (or maybe great grandfather) was a member of.
