Satin Stitch

August 6, 2015

I finished a card this morning, did a bit of clean up, and then had a lovely phone chat with Diane. Since there was still a little bit of morning left before my Red Cross shift I worked on some Guild library business.

I have one block on Elizabeth’s House that has a lot of satin stitch. I’ve done a lot of satin stitch on some of the flowers, but the section I’m working on has a lot more and it needs to go through a couple of layers of appliqué. I worked on the block at one of our Guild bees and a fellow quilter suggested I should try the satin stitch on my machine (Ruby).

I did a bit of practicing; the stitch looks good and the default width looks about right. I’ve picked out some threads that are more or less the same as the embroidery floss called for. I’ll do a bit more testing, but I’m hopeful I can make it work. I have a permanent callus on the end of my finger from my needle; I don’t even know if I could get through the layers on this block.

I’m working on some small knitting projects in the evenings and I think tonight I’ll be able to switch projects. My goal is to have this particular bin of wool scraps empty by the time the craft sale rolls around.

UPDATE:

The nice thing about satin stitch is it is easy to take out if you stitch the wrong colour in the wrong place! But overall it is working!
