As with the previous book I read by this author, the story is slow in the telling. Written in the voice of an elderly woman, she recalls her life working “below the stairs” at a large estate in England. Grace was only 14 when she took her place at Riverton House, where her mother worked until the time Grace was born. The book gives us a glimpse at life “above the stairs” as well as it details the lives and secrets of the Hartford family.
