There’s a first time for everything

We were at the clubhouse today and, since the Mini Meez were meeting, I didn’t take my sewing machine with me. I had all my projects loaded last night and was ready to go this morning.

But overnight I had a change of heart in what I wanted to do with the colours on the hand-pieced block I was working on. I pulled a few different fabrics from the bin, put them in my carrying case and off I went. When I got to the bee I was unloading “stuff” and realized I’d left my actual project bag at home. I had taken the bag out of the carrying case when I was looking at different colours and never put it back. I had to make a quick trip home to pick it up; it’s a good thing the clubhouse is just up the hill from home and not across town!

We started with a meeting about the Mount Washington retreat coming up this weekend. I am even more excited today because I don’t need to drive; I will be car pooling with another woman. I have gone from not knowing what to take to having quite a few ideas; we were advised to pack projects in soft-sided small bags so we can load the vehicles to the top!

The retreat meeting was followed immediately by a meeting with the miniature quilters. Everyone was very impressed with all I had done. I took the two Jacob’s Ladder pieces, the four small blocks I have hand-pieced, and a few cards that were finished but hadn’t yet gone in the mail. Once that meeting was over it was finally time to do some stitching.

This will finish at 3"
This will finish at 3″

I pieced the fifth block in my series – a miniature Bear Paw. It was finished a few minutes after lunch so I pulled out another miniature pattern made with half-square triangles. Since the pattern had already been done by at least two others, I decided I wanted to try something different. But I didn’t have another project with me to work on. Usually I have too many projects; never have I been without something to work on.

I had a few books and magazines with me as I wanted a pattern that would use some fat quarters I received for Mother’s Day. While browsing I found a couple of patterns that I think I can cut down to make miniatures with. I will use the 10″ Square pattern I made at the Guild a couple of years ago for my fat quarters; the instructor of that class was at the bee and she said rather than use 10″ squares I should use 9″ squares as I can get more out of each fat quarter and it won’t make any difference to how the blocks go together.

I’m so glad my “down” time wasn’t wasted!
