This is the second book chosen in my resolution to clear off my book shelves. I may have picked it because it was so thick I could fit two other books into the space it left behind.
The book covers several centuries of Russian history told through characters from both the ruling class and the peasant serfs. Each generation of characters was linked back to a generation or two previous so you were able to follow the family histories from poverty to riches and back to poverty. There is a family tree in the front of the book; I didn’t refer to it while I was reading but it was fun to look at when I finished.
