Author: Miriam Toews
This author has been on my radar since I saw a stage adaptation of another of her books. I borrowed this from the library and when I picked it up Brenda, my friend who works there, made a comment about “tackling” the book. I asked her what she meant and she said it was well written, but challenging. I didn’t find that to be the case at all. The story deals with a sensitive subject matter (suicide and the right to die) but it was in no way depressing or heavy. Many times I found myself laughing out loud as I imagined Yolandi struggling through her days with the ever-glorious Elfrieda to compare herself to.
