The wind blew well into the night and was replaced by rain early this morning. What to do on a rainy day in Doolin? Teresa suggested a trip to the Doolin Caves, and then offered to drive us and pick us up after our tour.
Caves aren’t necessarily my “thing” but it was interesting. The cave itself was formed during the ice age; the gigantic stalactite, which is the main attraction, is half a million years old. The cave was discovered in 1952, but the centre didn’t open to the public until 2006. The Great Stalactite is suspended 23 feet from the ceiling, and to get to it you have to descend eight stories (125 steps).
By the time the tour ended the rain had stopped and there was a promise of sunshine.
Doolin is actually made up of two small settlements. We are staying in Fisherstreet but on the way back Teresa dropped us off in Roadford. We stopped for coffee at one of the pubs before wandering up the hill to the old cemetery.
We had a late lunch in one of the other pubs before walking the kilometer back to our part of town.
Teresa says the music at O’Connor’s pub tonight is a “must” – she hasn’t steered us wrong so far so we’ll be there!
