We didn’t do so well at Trivia Night last night. We tried to nab a couple of folks for our table as they came in the door but they were already meeting a team. The table beside us were a fun bunch and it seemed like they might be expecting more than the allowable six members. We told them we’d be happy to take their overflow; two folks joined us so we were a team of four.

We were out of the gate running and had a good first round. Not good enough to make the top three, but we knew we had to be in the top five. The second round was a disaster – we struggled with matching Olympic years to the cities they were held in, and we didn’t do well on a couple of questions regarding musical instruments. We did better than we have ever done in the musical category though thanks to the other two members of the team.

In the end we didn’t place anywhere near the top, but we did mark the sheet of the table who won third prize, and we were sitting beside the table who won first prize. Obviously they gave us their weakest team members! It was a lot of fun and we met some new people. And I discovered a new drink – a London Fog is like a vanilla latte but made with Earl Grey tea rather than coffee.

I went to bed with the intention of making some progress on my book – it’s due back at the library in another week. It was two in the morning before I reached the end of a section and turned the light out. It’s a good thing there was nothing on the schedule for today other than garbage and recycle. I got both rooms in my studio tidied so that alone counts for a good days work. I have a Guild demo tomorrow night and I got my prep work done for that.

The Cinematheque Series starts tonight so we’ll be off to the movies – again!

It’s been a long time

Wonky StarI took this Wonky Star class last year through the Guild. I got about half the blocks done and then put it away. Today it was time to pull it out and get back to work on it.

Fortunately the woman who taught the class was at the bee today, and one of the women who has completed her quilt was sitting right across the table from me. When I couldn’t figure something out, one or the other was able to help me. I got a couple more blocks done today. Now that I’m remembering how it was done I won’t set the project aside. I hope to have it finished in the next few weeks so I can deliver it on my April trip.

We’re off to Trivia Night tonight. Hopefully we will find some folks willing to form a team once we get there. Pat and I on our own don’t do so well!

The Book Thief

Book Thief

I’ve had the book on order from the Library for quite awhile, but the movie arrived before the book. This is a beautiful story about a very ugly time in Germany’s history. Liesel is a young German girl who has been sent to live with a foster family; we never know for certain why (was her mother a Communist or Jewish?). She forms an immediate connection with her foster father, but finds her foster mother a little more difficult. She arrives not knowing how to read or write, but over the course of the movie her love for books grows. The narrator (God? Death?) ties up all the loose ends.

Movie anyone?

It was a tiring day at BOND. Except for about twenty minutes when I sat for lunch, I was on my feet all day. Probably better for me than spending most of the weekend sitting on my butt at the film festival, but my back is complaining.

It was a chatty group today – it was past three and they were all still visiting. I love watching the way the group changes depending on who is in the group. The past few months we’ve had some very knowledgeable mums so the talk was all about the best practices, what their doctors have told them – educational stuff. The group we have now seem to be more into pregnancy stories and sharing their life experiences. All are fun though and I’m always sorry to see them go when they “graduate”.

We are off to the movies again tonight. The film festival is over but the regular movie is The Book Thief and this is our only opportunity. It isn’t like we can wait for a movie to come to the cheap theaters, as there is only one and we pay only $5.50 whenever we go. It is on again tomorrow but we are scheduled for Trivia Night. Our regular Cinemateque series starts again on Wednesday. No evenings at home this week until Friday, but I haven’t checked the calendar so maybe Friday is just wishful thinking.

I’d like to relax a bit longer, but I need to get packed up for the bee tomorrow.
