After breakfast I headed outside to tackle the bindweed and blackberries that have sprouted up in our rose garden. When the gardeners were here earlier in the year they did a good job of thinning the roses and getting rid of a lot of the weeds. Dressed in my rubber boots, long pants and long sleeves I climbed the wall until I was standing against the fence in the back yard (above the carport).
There weren’t as many blackberries as I expected, but the ones that were there were big. The bindweed was out of control. I wish there was some useful purpose for bindweed; if I could find a market for it we could make a fortune in no time just in our little patch of yard! It took a couple of hours before the cleaning out and cleaning up was done. When I finished I sat on the back deck and admired my work while I enjoyed a second cup of coffee.
Along with my coffee I browsed through the latest issue of my quilting magazine. I looked at it once before and one of the patterns caught my eye. I read through the instructions again today and I think it is something I will attempt. Of course that means a trip to the fabric store which will be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.
My last yard work for the day was to pick the rhubarb. I cut enough to make a lovely crisp for lunch. I used a recipe from Diane that used orange zest, orange juice and ginger. The recipe is actually for a rhubarb square but I used the filling recipe for the bottom and half the topping recipe. It was really good and I’ll make it this way again; I may make the rhubarb squares sometime too.
Half the afternoon was gone before I made my way up to my studio. I finished work on my mystery pattern and then got busy on some cards. We’re not even half way through the month and I’m already two cards behind!
