This Danish film is based on the true story of a young English woman who, by marriage, becomes the Queen of Denmark. Her husband is eccentric (some say insane) and, after the birth of their son, she falls in love with her husband’s physician. For a brief time, under the influence of his doctor, the King is persuaded to bring about revolutionary changes to the rule in Denmark. When the affair becomes public the physician is executed, the Queen is sent into exile, and all the reforms are retracted. A note at the end of the film tells us that their son eventually becomes King and again sets Denmark on the road to reform.
