Les Misérables and Harmony

At a recent movie we saw the trailer for Les Misérables. I loved the book and the stage play, and I listened to the soundtrack for many months after. My original soundtrack was on cassette tape (yes, I’m old). After seeing the trailer and when trying to decided if I wanted to see the movie, I downloaded the soundtrack to my iPad and I’ve spent the afternoon listening. The songs are very familiar even though it has been years since I heard them. Now, back to the movie version. I can totally see Helena Bonham Carter as Madame Thénardier, and I might be able to get my head around Anne Hathaway as Fantine. What doesn’t work so well (at all) is Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean and Russell Crowe as Javert. At this point I think I’ll pass on the movie, but it is showing for a few more days so I can still change my mind.

I heard an interview with Serena Ryder before Christmas and put her Harmony album on my “if I get an iTunes card” list. I did get a card and downloaded it. I’ve enjoyed her “is it o.k” album and the first song on this new album showcased that signature voice. As I listened to other tracks though I couldn’t help but remember her being compared in that interview to Adele. The more I listened the more I heard Adele. That distinctive voice is still heard on some of the tracks though and I like the album.

As I write this I’m listening to Adele and she sounds a lot like Serena Ryder!
