I’m just home from a wonderful day of sewing with several members of the Guild. We were learning how to make a One Block Wonder quilt.
Here is the fabric I started with. Right from the get-go I was told the border print might be a problem. But it was cheap fabric ($3.50/yard) and since I was taking the class only to learn the technique I didn’t want to spend more.
After much consultation with two of the instructors and Barb, our Texada wizard, we found a spot to call a repeat and just went with it. Here are six layers of fabric lined up, with repeats matched, and ready to start cutting.
I didn’t count how many triangles I ended up with, but I was short one entire row. I think we cut too much off one side in order to straighten the cutting edge. No matter – it will be a smaller piece but I’ll still be learning everything I need to know.
Once the six layers were cut I started sewing them back together. The first few I made looked like they were from different planets, but as I got more together you could see how they could be grouped into some sort of pattern.
After day one I’m not caught up, but I’m not too far behind either. I have a few more blocks to put together in the morning and the next step is laying the blocks into rows. There is some talk about adding cubes to the mix (I can’t even imagine) but I guess with enough cubes added I would end up with the correct number of blocks. We’ll see!
