My bags aren’t packed and I’m not ready to go

I used to be such a great planner. I could pack for myself and three kids and never leave anything (or anyone) behind. I’ve planned to pack all week, and here I am barely started!

I spent the morning upstairs gathering all my unfinished projects and fitting them into my suitcase. Then I started looking for something that I knew was in one of those unpacked boxes I talked about last week and, while doing that, I was taking a little trip down memory lane. I looked at some old report cards. I used to be so smart- I wonder what happened! I eventually found what I was looking for, along with a couple of other things, and they went in the suitcase as well.

Then I was off to my Red Cross shift. The head of Loan Services for the Red Cross, Darlene, was over from Courtenay today so we had to be on our best behaviour – I was very careful in my washing up. Along with her I also had three other ladies from the Auxiliary telling her what it is we do and how we do it. I don’t think any of it was news to her but the ladies seemed to like repeating it all.

The question of computers came up. Darlene said she’d like to get a computer for us but the ladies all quickly said “Oh no, none of the volunteers would use it”. I kept my mouth shut because, if it were used right, a computer would solve a lot of the inventory problems. The conversation moved on but then they asked me if I would be comfortable using a computer. I said I had worked in the field for many years. Before I knew it Darlene had my name and phone number in her book. Would be willing to come over to Courtenay to see the system they use? Would I be able to set up a lap top if they got one? What have I gotten myself into?

I stopped in to see Margaret after my shift. She was in good spirits and has moved out of Maternity and back into the general ward. She will be in hospital over the weekend but I think they will be sending her home next week. They will arrange extra care for her once she is at home so that will be good. I thought she was getting around pretty good, but we were just heading out for a walk down the hall when a nurse came and brought her a walker that had a seat on it. She mentioned that it would be better for Margaret because she gets so short of breath and she’ll be able to sit down whenever she needs to.

As soon as I got home Pat and I started setting up for the House Concert tomorrow night. We were sold out before we started shifting chairs, and then we sold three more tickets in the space of a couple of hours. There are two performers coming this time so it seemed right to earn them as much money as possible.

I spent the early evening finishing up my cleaning and once I shut down my computer I will get busy on that packing!
