Two done, two more to go

I needed to get some housework done before I was able to head upstairs. Once I’m in my studio it is hard to get me out of it so if the work doesn’t get done first thing, it usually doesn’t get done.

Alex’s birthday present was first on the list. I knew I’d do straight lines, and expected the job to be very quick. After all the blocks were outlined I thought it looked a little plain so I found a template and used that on half of the blocks. But then the other half of the blocks looked plain so I did a bit more quilting on them. Before I knew it the morning was gone as well as a good part of the afternoon.

I had a nice chat with Diane today. We were both working on quilting projects. She was doing some free-motion quilting and it was going very well – how I envy her. We don’t chat often enough, but we’re always able to pick up where we left off the last time. She says they still have very hot days although it is cooler at night and in the morning. We definitely have fall weather here – cool in the morning and at night and, unless it is a particularly sunny day, it is barely above 20. I guess there are disadvantages to the ocean breeze!

I got one of my door hangers quilted before supper. I never plan ahead enough that the fabric on the back matches the fabric on the front. This piece was a particular problem because I had a very light background on my blocks, but a very dark backing fabric. Usually I try to have the quilting as inconspicuous as possible but for this piece I went very bold and made the quilting stand out. I’m not sure I like it – I have it hung on one of the doors upstairs. I’ll see how I feel about it after seeing it a few more times.

I’ll spend the rest of my evening with my book.
