Five is enough

I don’t quilt in public so I wasn’t taking my butterflies to the bee this morning. And, since things were working well with the quilting set up, I didn’t want to reconfigure my machine to work on anything else.

I wasn’t happy with my community quilt because of the proportions, and I thought adding a border on only two of the sides would be weird. I read somewhere this week that often a quilt is one block longer than it is wide. That made sense to me so I brought the top and my ripper to the bee and took off two rows from the bottom of the quilt. I will add borders to all four sides and I think it will be a good size.

I also brought along my appliqué project and I have the colours picked out for the remaining five blocks. The pieces still have to be trimmed, turned under and placed on the background fabric, but they are slowly coming together. This has been my “go to” project to take to the bee when I didn’t have anything else to work on, or didn’t feel like dragging my machine out. Since I finished block 11 I’ve caught up on the hand stitching.

Our fabric shop has a 30% off sale on and I hope to find some backing material for the appliqué project. I could probably wait until next year’s sale, but I think having the backing will be an incentive. I’m also going to pick up some quilting frames as Stacia and Deloise are going to teach me how to hand quilt. I have a pattern picked out for Will’s quilt so I’ll look for fabric for that, and I want to try an Irish chain. The list could go on and on, but I’m trying to show some restraint. Good thing I paid off my credit card today before my shopping spree tomorrow!

We had a busy day at the bee and I had lots to write about when I came home. Because of the limitations of our blog software I ended up writing three posts rather than my usual single post. Shortly after I finished posting I had an e-mail from a member asking me to do a report on an upcoming challenge. So blog post number four was written.

Five posts in one day is enough!
