We look forward to the Blackberry Street Festival all year long. But before we started partying there was a day to get through.
We began the day shopping. Our blow-up bed sprung a leak and we can’t find where the hole is so we can’t patch it. We don’t expect any more company this summer (but we always hope) but for some of our House Concerts we are going to need two beds. The Brick had some futons on sale and we wanted to look at them. From there we headed to Home Furniture, the shop we bought our bedroom suite. By the time we drove there we had decided to get ourselves a new mattress and use the box spring (which we don’t use) and our old mattress for one of the spare rooms. We already have a bed in the other room.
The shop had some lovely mattresses, and they had a sale on as well. We were advised not to try the top-end mattress first because we’d want it. We tried it first, and we wanted it! We could feel the difference between it and some of the others we tried, but we didn’t make any decisions. We got a little off-track when we saw that they had a bedroom suite like ours, but the one they had incorporated both the box spring and the mattress and it was still lower to the floor than ours. You may remember that when we got our bed we originally had both the box spring and mattress on the frame but we needed a ladder to get into it. Even with just the mattress on the frame it is a stretch to get into bed every night. We did some measuring and came home and did some more measuring and there is definitely something “off” about the one we have. It looks good though and works fine so I think we’ve decided to go back to the plan of buying a new mattress and using the old mattress and box spring as a spare bed.
I got another set of six pockets sewn onto my Advent calendar this afternoon. This part of the sewing is going really well – I don’t know why I put it off for so long. When they were done I still had some afternoon left so I did a bit of stitching on one of my applique blocks.
Finally it was time to head down to the street festival. We saw lots of folks we know and re-visited some of our favorite food booths. The Townsite Heritage Society has the best blackberry shortcake, and this year the Italian Club were serving Pana Dolce. Since we had our dessert first we looked for some main course dishes. We have a new restaurant opening and they were handing out free tasters (bacon jam which they will serve with perogies); we found a new booth selling salad rolls; and then we found the bannock. Pat had a piece with salmon spread, but I stuck to good old peanut butter and raspberry jam on mine.
In honour of the occasion we had a spectacular sunset.
