Community Quilts – Day One

Saturday, March 31, 2012

I hoped to be out the door by nine this morning, but I was up for about an hour and a half in the middle of the night so I slept in a bit. I was still at the center in plenty of time to grab a table near one of the ironing boards and get started on my strip blocks before anyone put me to work doing sandwiching or quilting.

I finished nine more blocks today, and there are six more started. I ran out of foundation squares, as well as long pieces of fabric to cover the diagonal on the blocks. I was offered some lovely two and a half inch strips (jelly rolls) and used some so that I could keep going. I know there are many patterns for using jelly rolls and I really hated to eat into the stash in case someone was planning to make one of them.

I came home and cut eighteen more foundation squares. I’m not sure how large this quilt will be, but I decided I might as well cut out all the foundation blocks that I could from the fabric I had. I also went back through my scrap bin and found some long pieces that I can use tomorrow for the diagonals.

I’m off now to find a new knitting or crocheting project for the evening. Hockey again tonight!
