Sliced bread

This was my first day at BOND since our Christmas party in the middle of December. There were lots of new babies of course, and some of the Mums are nearing their delivery dates. When I left the house I had my grocery list made out in preparation for making Broccoli Soup (which was on the menu calendar from last year at this time). When I got to the office, Connie said that Jen had suggested that we have Macaroni and Cheese. Since Jen wasn’t in the office, Connie said it was up to me what I wanted to make. You know that cooking isn’t my forte, but I have made Macaroni before and it went over quite well. When I got to the store I saw that broccoli was on sale (and cheese wasn’t) so I took that as a sign.

To go along with the soup (and the usual veggies and fruit) I decided I’d get some bread. We often get Garlic Bread or baguettes, but I wanted a thicker loaf for today. I had the bright idea that I would get the folks in the bakery to slice it for me. When I asked if they could do it, the woman pointed out the bread slicer that is available to the public. She sliced the first loaf for me in lovely equally sized slices. Then I was on my own to slice the second loaf.

I put the bread in the machine, slid the rule up to the end of the loaf and hit the start button. Within a couple of seconds I was looking for a stop button! Apparently the loaf wasn’t secured as well as I thought and it started twisting and turning as the slicer continued to slice. I ended up with some very odd shaped pieces of bread. Some were cut from end to end, some were a skinny little piece that got sliced when the bread was in transition from end-to-end to side-to-side. When I got to the checkout the clerk and I had a good laugh about the bread. She was able to guess correctly which loaf the baker had sliced and which one I did! I was able to use most of the slices from the loaf and nobody complained about the shape of any of it.

I guess I had bread on my mind because once I was home and had revived myself with a nice cup of coffee and a chat with the Thomases, I decided to make myself a loaf of bread. I had some olives in the fridge from something we made at some time so I thought I’d throw them in. I also added a bit of basil to the mix.

I moved my sewing machine down to the kitchen table (better light) and while the bread was cooking I got four more blocks quilted. I’m still working on straight lines, and have a few more to go before I get to the free-motion part.

My bread is just out of the machine so I think I’ll go taste a piece of it.
