A night of jazz

There was a Jazz Dinner concert tonight and, because Pat has been out of town, I thought I might have been lucky enough that he would forget about it. We laughed a few weeks ago when we talked about it – like that would be something I’d really want to go to! I appreciate the talent that goes into jazz, but I’m afraid it grates on my nerves after a very short time. I initially said I wouldn’t go, but when Pat said he wouldn’t go alone I changed my mind.

So to fortify myself for the evening I spent all day in my studio working on blocks. I got the two blocks done for my Block of the Month group. I know, the math doesn’t work out when it is a Block of the Month and the first month has two blocks. When they were finished I started work on the block for the Cookie Tin Exchange.

And then we were off for dinner. Pat must have also been trying to fortify me for the evening as we bought a bottle of wine to share (usually we each get a glass because he likes red and I like white). We were surprised at how much of the evening’s entertainment was provided by the high school students. When we realized it was a fundraiser for their music program it made perfect sense though. While we had our salad, the junior jazz choir and then the senior jazz choir performed. After our main course there were a number of solos by members of the senior choir, with the professional musicians providing the accompaniment. Finally, after dessert, we got to performances by the professional jazz musicians.

The one saving grace for the whole evening was that there was a lot of trumpet music during the performances. I thought of Dad when I heard the trumpet and it made it all okay (and I also planned out some quilting patterns in my head)!

We were surprised when we came out of the concert to a lot of slush and a skiff of snow on the ground. The roads were clear though and we had no trouble making it down the hill from the school or up the hill to home!
